Aragon Network launch phases and target dates

As progress in the Aragon Court is steadily advancing towards a protocol implementation freeze, itā€™s now a good time to start discussing the logistics of the Aragon Network v1 launch.

Given the number of components involved and how critical the launch is, we are proposing a multi phase launch Aragon Network.

Please bear in mind that there are still many moving pieces and some uncertainty ahead such as security audits. Any dates in this post are merely targets that we are trying to hit.

Phase 1: ANJ launch and Aragon Court deployment

Target: December 2019

The Aragon Network Jurisdiction token (ANJ) will be created and an Aragon Court instance will be deployed using ANJ as its token.

In phase 1, ANT holders will start being able to get ANJ to become jurors. There will be a period of time during which all ANT holders that stake will get the same amount of ANJ per ANT. After this period of time, an Aragon Fundraising bonding curve will be initialized and allow for staking and unstaking at a variable rate.

During phase 1, future jurors will be able to activate their ANJ into the Aragon Court and be ready to start adjudicating disputes as soon as the Court opens in phase 2.

What needs to come together

  • Aragon Court protocol implementation completion and security audits

  • Basic Aragon Court UI that allows jurors to get ANJ and activate it

  • Initial parametrization for the Aragon Court (including schedule for phase 2 start date)

Phase 2: Aragon Court launch

Target: ~1 month after phase 1

Phase 2 will automatically start at a time set when deploying the Aragon Court. The first term of the Court will begin, allowing for disputes to be created and adjudicated. By the time phase 2 starts, there should be a healthy amount of jurors already activated, guaranteeing the security of the court from the start.

During phase 2, it will be a good time to seed the Court with test disputes similar to the ones that will arise with Proposal Agreements, which will serve to create precedent even before the first ā€˜real disputesā€™ are created. This will be useful as well for testing the full mechanism with real value at stake, but before organizations are relying on the Court for their operation. A ā€˜honey potā€™ bug bounty could also be done at this point, transferring a big amount of funds to a contract that depends on the Court and encouraging hackers to steal those.

What needs to come together

  • Full Aragon Court UI that allows jurors to participate in the adjudication process and claim rewards

Phase 3: Aragon Network DAO

Target: Q3 2020

Phase 3 will complete the release of the Aragon Network, with the deployment of a sovereign DAO controlled by ANT holders that uses Proposal Agreements and the Aragon Court for 51% attack protection.

The Aragon Network DAO will receive revenue from the Aragon Courtā€™s subscription fees and it will be in charge of governing some critical parameters of the Aragon Court (before phase 3, these should be controlled by a multisig that allows fast execution in case of emergencies).

What needs to come together

  • Proposal Agreements support in the Aragon client (requiring contract audits)

After years in the making, the Aragon Network is becoming a reality :rocket:

a few questions on the juror pool:

  • What do you consider a healthy amount of jurors?
  • Other than pre bonding curve staking, will there be additional incentives to onboard jurors?

considering low turnout in the AGP process, it seems to me more may need to be done to attract jurors. Of course these are two very different things as users will materially benefit from staking so a lot of ANT will probably be staked at this time. But the amount is not the only metric to be optimised, its also the distribution

on ANJ:

  • Will staked ANT still be usable in the ANV process?

Iā€™d say 5% of the total supply of ANT staked and active would be a healthy amount for getting started. The Courtā€™s security is a function of how much value is at stake, so we should try to maximize this when organizations are depending on the Court.

Jurors will earn fees when they successfully adjudicate a dispute and also earn passive income on their stake from subscription fees. As more organizations rely on the Court, this passive income for jurors could become significative, even if they are not selected to adjudicate disputes.

The bonding curve will be an ongoing incentive to join as a juror early if someone predicts Court usage to grow, as the staking price will go up depending on the current supply of ANJ.

Apart from those ā€˜organic incentivesā€™, we are thinking of other creative ways to encourage ANT holders or potential jurors to onboard. We should definitely create a separate thread to brainstorm these cc @jack @light

Not directly, as all staked ANT will be pooled together in an Agent instance (Aragon Fundraisingā€™s Pool), so all that ANT would have to vote together. It would be technically possible for active jurors to vote in ANVs as an entity (with a balance-weighted vote for the jurors how to decide to vote on ANVs), although this introduces fun game theoretical challenges (e.g. if ~50% of ANT is staked into ANJ, someone with ~50% of ANJ would control the entire network, with a stake in the network of just ~25% of the economic value).

:tada:

Has anyone modeled this? Considering super low participation in decentralized networks, and Aragon in general, Iā€™m really curious what kind of volume would be required to make passive income for jurors ā€œsignificant.ā€ Then from there Iā€™d be curious what use cases are expected to drive that volume and what the roadmap is to engage with those users to get them on board.

This is most unfortunate. Why is the Agent app being used and what modifications would be required so that jurors donā€™t incur an opportunity cost of either voting in ANV or becoming a juror? Considering that early adopters are probably going to be Aragon community members, this seems kind of important.

Yes. We have been working on a valuation framework for the network and the court in particular which should get out this week!

We want to use Aragon Fundraising with as little changes as possible, and in AF reserve funds are held in an Agent so that they can be used for Voting.

I totally get this concern. Although jurors will be quite powerful, and the Aragon Network could be seen as a bicameral system (as jurors can stop proposals from being voted by ANT holders).

Looking forward to this! Very relevant to all the efforts to drive value to ANT

Wanted to double check this; with Aragon Fundraising right now, the bonding curve is set up immediately with the presale, and not when the presale ends.

The rationale for this is that buyers get to know what the ā€œrisk levelā€ is for a given organization ahead of purchasing; even if the starting prices are the same, a different bonding curve will create vastly different price fluctuations.

Is the Court launch intending to depart from this model, or was it something we overlooked?

We may not use the same pre-sale contract as fundraising, but the expectation would be that the parameters of the curve will be known and fixed prior to anyone participating.

Hi all!

I wanted to share with you all the dates we are planning for phases 1 and 2 now that we are getting closer to the deadlines. This is not completely set in stone, but the Aragon One team is working really focused to accomplish these milestones on the following dates:

  • Nov 25th - Dec 6th: Deploy and announce Court v1
  • Dec 9th - Dec 16th: Launch jurors site with on-boarding information
  • Early January: Start ANJ pre-sale
  • Early February: Start Aragon Court

Specific dates for the ANJ pre-sale start date and Court start date will be confirmed when Court v1 is announced.
